Here, at Examcast, we have designed a comprehensive, online course that allows students to study ordinary level French outside of school. Our course focuses heavily on past examination papers. Our videos are easy to follow and use and will equip students with all the information that they need to do practice questions and to correct the examination papers. All of the French language components are read by a native French speaker.

If you have taken French to Junior Certificate level at higher level, you may be pleasantly surprised to discover that passing an ordinary level paper at Leaving Certificate is very manageable. For college purposes, an O6 (40% on an ordinary level paper) is deemed a pass.

What does the exam consist of ?

Total Marks: 400 marks
Listening | Aural examination: 100 marks (25% of overall mark)
Oral Examination: 80 marks (20% of overall mark)

Written Exercises:
Fill in the Gaps 30 marks (7.5% of overall mark)
or
Fill in a Form 30 marks (7.5% of overall mark)

One of the following:
Postcard | Message | Letter | Diary Entry 30 marks (7.5% of overall mark)
Reading Comprehension: 160 marks (40% of overall mark)

Comprehension 1:
This comprehension is the easiest one on the paper, questions are asked and answered in English. This question is not unlike Junior Certificate French in style and content.
40 marks (10% of overall mark)

Comprehension 2:
Slightly more difficult that Comprehension 1, but again, questions are asked and answered in English.
40 marks (10% of overall mark)

Comprehension 3:
This question is more challenging as questions are asked and answered in French. However, it is usually an interview style, and when you have practiced all the past sample papers, it is a manageable section to pass.

Comprehension 4:
This is by far the most challenging question on the ordinary level paper. However, don’t fret, you can still comfortably pass the exam paper without putting a lot of work into this question. On the day of the exam, just do your best to answer what you can on this question.
